It was accepted and included in the collection. Her mother encouraged her to enter the poem in a contest sponsored by The Lyric Year, an annual volume of poetry. Edna has already been writing - and even publishing - poetry while in her teens. The backstory of the poem’s publication sets the stage for what would be an eventful and dramatic life. The poem considers human suffering and death, and after a refreshing rain, the narrator is once again able to experience joy, the rebirth of life - thus the title, “Renascence.” Battle in Camden, Maine, which now has a plaque in the spot that inspired its lines. The poem was written on the summit of Mt. The narrator of the poem is writing from a mountaintop from which she observes the broad vista observation becomes a mystical experience. Though it was published when she was just nineteen, it held up as one of the best poems in her canon. Vincent Millay (1892 – 1950) is the 1912 poem that put this iconic American poet on the literary map.
